The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK Government-backed grant programme designed to help homeowners and landlords move away from traditional fossil fuel heating systems and switch to low-carbon heating alternatives.
The scheme helps reduce the upfront cost of renewable heating technologies by providing grants that are applied directly through approved installers.
Rather than receiving money back after installation, the grant is deducted from the installation cost, helping reduce the amount paid upfront.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme remains available and is currently scheduled to run until 2028 across England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland operate separate support schemes.
What Could The Grant Help Cover?
The scheme may provide support towards:
- Air Source Heat Pumps – up to £7,500
- Ground Source Heat Pumps – up to £7,500
(including eligible water source systems)
- Biomass Boilers – up to £5,000
(typically available for suitable rural properties not connected to the gas network)
These grants are paid directly to approved installers and reduce the overall installation cost.
Who Could Qualify?
You may be eligible if:
- You are a homeowner
- You are a private or small landlord
- Your property currently uses a fossil fuel or direct electric heating system
- Your property has a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)
- Your EPC does not contain outstanding loft or cavity wall insulation recommendations
For biomass systems, additional criteria may apply and properties are generally expected to be in rural locations away from the gas grid.
How To Apply
Step 1 – Check Your Property Details
Review your property's heating system and EPC information to confirm whether your home may be suitable.
For biomass systems, gas network availability and location may also be relevant.
Step 2 – Contact Grants Gateway
Grants Gateway can discuss potential funding routes and provide guidance on available options through approved installer networks.
Step 3 – Arrange A Home Assessment
An approved installer can assess your property and determine whether a heat pump or renewable heating system may be suitable.
You may receive an installation quote with any eligible grant deduction already included.
Step 4 – Installer Application Process
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is installer-led, meaning applications are normally handled by approved installers.
If suitable, the installer submits the grant application and you may be asked to confirm your consent during the process.
Step 5 – Approval & Installation
Once approved, installation can be arranged and completed by accredited contractors.
The grant is paid directly to the installer and deducted from the installation cost.
Important Information
- BUS applications are managed through approved installers
- Grants are deducted upfront rather than reimbursed later
- Households remain responsible for any remaining balance after grant deductions
- Biomass systems generally apply to suitable off-gas rural properties
- The scheme is currently expected to continue until 2028
