The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a UK Government-backed programme designed to help businesses, charities and public sector organisations install electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.

The scheme provides financial support towards the purchase and installation of eligible EV chargepoints.

What Support May Be Available?

Funding currently provides:

  • Up to 75% of eligible installation costs
  • Up to £350 per charging socket
  • Support for up to 40 sockets per applicant
  • Maximum potential support of up to £14,000

Support applies to approved charging equipment and installation works carried out by authorised installers.

What Could Funding Cover?

Support may include:

  • EV chargepoint equipment
  • Installation costs
  • Cabling and electrical works
  • Associated infrastructure upgrades
  • Multiple charging locations across sites
  • Staff and fleet vehicle charging facilities

Who May Be Eligible?

The scheme may be available to:

  • Businesses
  • Farms and agricultural businesses
  • Charities
  • Public sector organisations
  • Fleet operators
  • Community organisations

Applicants generally require:

  • Dedicated off-street parking
  • Ownership or permission to install chargepoints
  • Use of an approved installer

How The Process Works

Step 1 – Check Eligibility

Confirm:

  • Off-street parking availability
  • Number of charging points required
  • Site ownership or permission

Step 2 – Contact An Approved Installer

The installer normally:

  • Assesses your site
  • Confirms eligibility
  • Provides installation quotations
  • Applies scheme discounts directly

Step 3 – Approval & Installation

Once approved:

  • Charging equipment is installed
  • Electrical works completed
  • Grant support applied directly to installation costs

Businesses pay any remaining balance not covered by support.

Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (IETF) – Large Business Energy Support

The Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (IETF) was a UK Government programme created to help large industrial and energy-intensive businesses reduce energy use, lower operating costs and cut carbon emissions through major upgrades and cleaner technologies. It was aimed at projects that were often too large or expensive for businesses to fund alone. The scheme supported industrial sites across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, while Scotland operated separate support routes.

The programme ran through several funding phases and provided hundreds of millions of pounds in grant support for industrial decarbonisation projects. Phase 3 alone included £185 million of funding.

Who Was The Scheme For?

The scheme targeted businesses with high energy usage such as:

  • Manufacturing facilities
  • Food production plants
  • Data centres
  • Recycling and recovery sites
  • Industrial laundries
  • Mining and quarry operations
  • Controlled environment agriculture and horticulture
  • Heavy industrial facilities

Businesses needed to operate from eligible industrial sites and usually had qualifying SIC codes.

What Could Funding Cover?

Support included both studies and physical projects.

Feasibility & Engineering Studies

Funding helped businesses investigate:

  • Heat recovery opportunities
  • Electrification projects
  • Hydrogen conversion projects
  • Process redesign
  • Carbon reduction options

Energy Efficiency Projects

Examples included:

  • Heat recovery systems
  • Industrial heat pumps
  • Process optimisation equipment
  • High-efficiency motors
  • Control systems
  • Waste heat capture technologies

Deep Decarbonisation Projects

Examples included:

  • Fuel switching projects
  • Electrification of industrial processes
  • Hydrogen-ready equipment
  • Carbon reduction technologies
  • Major industrial energy upgrades

How Much Funding Was Available?

Previous rounds provided grants such as:

  • Feasibility studies: approximately £30,000–£7 million
  • Engineering studies: up to approximately £14 million
  • Energy efficiency projects: up to approximately £14 million
  • Deep decarbonisation projects: up to approximately £30 million
  • Funding could cover up to 70% of eligible costs, depending on project type and company size.

How Businesses Applied Before The Scheme Closed

Step 1 – Initial Eligibility Review

Businesses first checked:

  • Whether their sector qualified
  • SIC code eligibility
  • Site location requirements
  • Energy usage levels
  • Project suitability

Step 2 – Develop The Project

Businesses often worked with:

  • Energy consultants
  • Industrial engineers
  • Decarbonisation specialists
  • Technology providers
  • Grant advisers

Many businesses carried out early studies before submitting full deployment projects.

Step 3 – Competition Window Opens

Applications were submitted during competition windows.

For example, the Spring 2024 phase opened 29 January 2024 and closed 19 April 2024.

Step 4 – Submit Application

Businesses submitted:

  • Technical project plans
  • Energy saving calculations
  • Carbon reduction forecasts
  • Financial models
  • Cost breakdowns
  • Supporting evidence

Applications were made through the Government competition process managed by the Department for Energy Security and delivery partners.

Step 5 – Assessment & Due Diligence

Applications were scored based on:

  • Carbon savings
  • Energy reduction
  • Project viability
  • Value for money
  • Deliverability

Only higher scoring projects moved forward.

Current Position

The Government later confirmed there would be no further extension of the Industrial Energy Transformation Fund, and future competition windows will not proceed. Existing projects already awarded funding continue through to completion.
