Background
After years of relying on costly electric heaters, Ms Fraser, a homeowner in rural Argyll, wanted to explore more efficient ways to heat her detached cottage. She was referred to an energy advice service by a local support organisation and was keen to understand what options were available for improving comfort and reducing running costs.
“My brother came to stay during a particularly cold February,” she said. “He kept saying the house felt icy no matter how high I turned the heaters up. That pushed me to seek proper advice.”
Her home used a mix of old electric panel heaters and storage units. She often avoided heating unused rooms and kept internal doors shut to try and retain heat.
Energy Advice & Assessment
An advisor from the regional energy team arranged a property visit. During the assessment, they completed a full evaluation and produced a tailored home energy report. It highlighted the benefits of improving insulation and switching to a low-carbon heating system.
“They explained everything clearly and sent me useful resources, especially around heat pump technology and insulation options,” Ms Fraser said.
She was advised to consider installing an air source heat pump and insulating the floors to help retain warmth. The advisor also pointed her to certified installers and funding options.
Funding & Installation
Ms Fraser applied for support through a government-backed scheme that offers grants and interest-free loans for energy improvements. With the funding, she was able to install an air source heat pump. She also used personal savings to cover underfloor insulation.
Outcome
The changes had an immediate effect.
“The house now feels evenly warm throughout—I no longer have to section off parts of it to stay comfortable,” she said. “It’s made a huge difference.”
Her energy usage dropped significantly, and her monthly bills are now much lower than before, even accounting for seasonal fluctuations. She also switched energy suppliers and had a smart meter installed, helping her keep track of usage.
“Before, I was paying far too much for little comfort. Now, I’m warm, and I’m saving money too. It’s been a worthwhile investment.”
