The Green Gas Support Scheme (GGSS) is a UK Government programme designed to increase the production of renewable gas and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

The scheme supports larger renewable energy projects that produce biomethane  – a renewable gas created from organic materials such as food waste, agricultural waste, slurry, crop residues and other biodegradable materials.

Biomethane is processed and upgraded before being injected into the national gas network, where it can then be used in the same way as traditional natural gas.

Once supplied to the grid, renewable gas can help provide:

  • Heating for homes and buildings
  • Hot water systems
  • Commercial and industrial energy use
  • Business and manufacturing energy demand
  • Lower-carbon gas supply across Great Britain

Unlike household grant programmes, GGSS is designed for larger commercial and infrastructure projects.

The scheme is administered by Ofgem and funded through the Green Gas Levy.

How Much Support Is Available?

GGSS does not provide a traditional upfront grant payment.

Instead, approved projects receive ongoing tariff payments based on the amount of renewable gas injected into the national gas network.

Current support includes:

  • Payments for biomethane injected into the gas grid
  • Support lasting up to 15 years per installation
  • Inflation-linked payment increases

Current tariff rates operate in production bands:

Tier 1: Up to 60,000 MWh annually – approximately 6.86p per kWh

Tier 2: Next 40,000 MWh annually – approximately 4.26p per kWh

Tier 3: Production above 100,000 MWh annually – approximately 3.98p per kWh

Payments vary depending on how much renewable gas is produced and supplied.

Who Is The Scheme Aimed At?

The Green Gas Support Scheme is designed for organisations developing large-scale renewable gas projects.

It is mainly aimed at:

  • Agricultural businesses and farms
  • Anaerobic digestion (AD) plant operators
  • Food waste processing companies
  • Waste management businesses
  • Renewable energy developers
  • Utility and infrastructure companies
  • Community energy organisations
  • Industrial businesses with large organic waste streams

Examples include:

  • Farms using slurry or agricultural waste to create renewable gas
  • Food manufacturers converting organic waste into energy
  • Waste companies processing food waste into biomethane
  • Developers building renewable gas production facilities connected to the national grid

Important information:

  • Not available for individual households
  • Domestic heating systems are not eligible
  • Small residential renewable projects are excluded
  • Projects must inject biomethane directly into the gas network
  • Environmental and sustainability requirements apply

What Could Be Included?

Biomethane Production Facilities

Projects may include:

  • Anaerobic digestion plants
  • Food waste processing facilities
  • Agricultural waste systems
  • Biomethane upgrading equipment
  • Renewable gas production systems

Infrastructure & Project Requirements

Projects may also include:

  • Grid connection infrastructure
  • Gas cleaning systems
  • Monitoring equipment
  • Sustainability reporting systems
  • Compliance and environmental controls

How The Process Works

Step 1 – Project Planning

Develop a renewable gas project and identify feedstock sources such as food waste, agricultural materials or organic waste.

Step 2 – Application Submission

Applications include technical information, project design and sustainability evidence.

Step 3 – Accreditation Review

Projects are assessed to ensure compliance with environmental and scheme requirements.

Step 4 – Renewable Gas Production Begins

Once operational, biomethane is injected into the national gas network.

Step 5 – Ongoing Payments

Tariff payments continue based on renewable gas supplied and may remain in place for up to 15 years.

Additional Information

  • Support is paid through long-term tariff payments rather than grants
  • Funding can continue for up to 15 years
  • Projects must meet sustainability standards
  • Environmental reporting and audits may apply
  • Intended for commercial-scale renewable energy projects
